Implication for practice and research

  • The presence of asymptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) should always be promptly recognised and addressed to prevent long-term morbidities and mortalities.

  • Future research should clarify and substantiate the benefits of early AF detection and management.

Context

AF is one of the most common arrhythmias with well-established risk factors for adverse cardiovascular outcomes.1 As most conceptual stances were derived from studies involving clinically symptomatic patients, there remained substantial unknown facets among asymptomatic AF patients. With the growing body of evidence and interest in early detection and management, Andrade et al have summarised the current understandings and outlined the schematic approaches in managing asymptomatic AF.2
