Implications for practice and research

  • Mindfulness interventions may alleviate or prevent depression and anxiety among mentally healthy pregnant women, but evidence suggests they are less effective for women with a history of depression or perinatal depressive or anxiety symptoms.

  • Future research should include maternal physiological indicators, infant assessment data, and examine whether findings differ based on cultural context.

Postpartum depression is a serious mental health condition with potentially significant adverse consequences for maternal and infant well-being. Identifying interventions that reduce the risk for postpartum depression has critical implications for nursing practice.
