Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) Best Practice Guideline Collaborative Practice Among nursing Teams
This best practice guideline replaces the Healthy Work Environment guideline, ‘Collaborative Practice Among Nursing Teams’. It was developed to assist the registered nurse (RN), the registered practical nurse (RPN) and the nurse practitioner (NP) working collaboratively to deliver safe effective care to diverse patient populations. Nursing is a profession that requires effective interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships to provide positive outcomes for patients/clients. With the mounting evidence of the importance of these relationships, this guideline examines the multiple factors relevant to intraprofessional collaborative practice among nurses that need to be considered to foster healthy work environments (HWEs), quality patient care and the retention and recruitment of nurses.

The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence examining the influences of successful education and professional role transition for RPNs pursuing a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BScN) and RN licensure through RPN-to-RN bridging programmes. The paper concludes that providing key transition supports may enhance the potential for successful student transition into and throughout a bridging programme, but further research is necessary to enhance this understanding and to recommend best practices for optimising students’ success.
