Using the journal club as a component of the research utilization process

Although journal clubs are recommended for research utilization, the various ways in which journal clubs are conducted do not always lead to research utilization. Major institutional changes in practice must be preceded by a comprehensive literature search and a complete review. An example is provided of how a series of journal clubs using the comprehensive search approach led to research utilization.

  • Journal clubs: A two-site case study of nurses' continuing professional development

    2013, Nurse Education Today
    Citation Excerpt :

A journal club is a meeting among colleagues designed to discuss articles that appear in professional journals that are relevant to clinical practice (Rich, 2006). Findings from nursing journal club literature suggest that they can improve nurses' confidence in interpreting and appraising research articles and foster a positive attitude towards research (Goodfellow, 2004); establish a regular habit of reading and raise awareness of relevant literature (Sheehan, 1994); increase knowledge (Kartes and Kamel, 2003); and lead to practice changes (St. Pierre, 2005; Kartes and Kamel, 2003; Kirchhoff and Beck, 1995). Lehna et al. (2010) analyzed the discussion postings in a virtual journal club and found that the contributions of nurses reflected knowledge, experience and critical thinking.

In summary, one way in which practice behaviours should develop is from the continuous appraisal of them. To obtain the ability to think critically is key to practice development, and as discussed by Kirchoff and Beck (1995), this involves the need to develop the collective ability of staff to firstly identify practice deficits and then to think creatively about how practice could be different. Conclusions then require the ability to formulate questions that can be put to the research literature for a critical appraisal.

These exemplars also have accumulated in a textbook format, as have other applications of EBP (http://www.fetchbook.info/Evidence_Based_Medicine.html). Perhaps the best way for surgeons and therapists to develop these skills is to incorporate EBP appraisal in journal clubs, where both the merits of the research design and the application of the evidence can be discussed with practitioners.2,40,41 The forms included in this article provide a structured process to evaluate articles that could be used in journal clubs.

  • Roles for the Advanced Practice Nurse in Nursing Research

    2007, Perioperative Nursing Clinics
    Citation Excerpt :

The APN can help facilitate this culture. There are several articles written that can help the APN start and participate in a journal club [38,41,42]. Implementing a journal club is a major responsibility because the staff need help on how to find research articles, critique the research, and implement the findings into practice.
