Implications for practice and research
Delivery of a monthly vitamin D supplement as part of a Meals-on-Wheels programme for homebound older adults who have low baseline 25(OH) vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels was effective in improving 25(OH)D levels and decreasing the rate of falls.
Future studies should focus on larger sample sizes, use of a double-blind or random route method for inclusion in the statistical analysis, and use of variable dosing schemes for the vitamin D intervention.
