Implications for practice and research

  • While alcohol problems are common in primary healthcare settings, and clinicians are well placed to identify and manage such problems, routine screening and identification is not the norm.

  • Simple and efficient screening approaches may solve one potential barrier to the implementation of alcohol brief interventions, but other factors may also need to be addressed.
