Implications for practice and research

  • The content and delivery of preoperative preparation programmes for children should be based on empirically validated evidence.

  • E-health technology may represent a unique and appealing option for delivery of preoperative preparation programmes as part of a stepped-care approach to surgical preparation.

  • Further research exploring the factors that may contribute to preoperative anxiety should be undertaken and used to support the development of e-health interventions.
