Implication for practice and research

  • The potential benefits of infrared ear thermometry include: the technique is a fast and therefore cost-effective because nursing time can be considerably reduced; measurements are not influenced by environmental temperature and there is no risk of cross-infection compared with conventional contact thermometers.

  • The use of infrared ear thermometers should be more widespread in hospitals and in general practices as there is a strong evidence-base supporting the reliability of this method of temperature measurement.
