METHODS

PubMed, PsycINFO, and Social Science Citation Index (1966–2004); the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register; and reference lists.

GraphicStudy selection and assessment:

randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that were published in English language, peer reviewed journals; enrolled adults with a diagnosis of primary insomnia; included ⩾1 cognitive behaviour therapy intervention; included ⩾1 of 5 sleep outcomes; and reported data that were not markedly non-normal. 23 RCTs met the selection criteria.
