Patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) require complex care and have a high risk of mortality and complications. Models of care that incorporate multidisciplinary care teams – teams including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and other critical care staff members – have been endorsed by professional organisations as a means of improving quality of care for patients in the ICU.
