Q What are the perspectives of people with cardiovascular disease regarding medication-related problems?
DESIGN
Qualitative study.
SETTING
5 general medical surgeries and 4 community pharmacies in south London, UK.
PARTICIPANTS
98 patients >18 years of age (mean age 67 y, range 32–89; 58% women), who were prescribed medicines for a cardiovascular condition. 65% of participants reported ⩾1 medication-related problem.
METHODS
In-depth home interviews addressed participants’ use of each prescribed medication, how this fit into daily activities, concerns or problems, and actions taken to resolve problems. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically using an inductive method.
MAIN FINDINGS
Participants identified 5 major categories of medication-related problems. (1) Perceptions of side effects and methods of coping. Participants accepted the possibility of side effects and described how they coped with them. Concerns included the possibility of becoming dependent with long-term use of drugs. …
